Vagabond collection by Viktor & Rolf

Viktor & Rolf’s Haute Couture Wear Scraps of Recycled Fabrics

Viktor & Rolf is a luxury fashion brand based in the Netherlands. The brand’s Autumn Winter 2016 collection, named Vagabond, is a unique fashion collection. It is the first time that a luxury fashion brand has used fabrics leftover from past seasons to create the haute-couture outerwear. One of the looks during the show

“It’s all – every little bit – from our own archives,” said Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren.

The name of the collection, Vagabond, comes from the vagabonds of British novelist Charles Dickens’ tales of Victorian London.  Those that belong nowhere, wandering from place to place.

“With their thrown-together, tattered and seemingly mismatched look, [Dickens’ vagabonds] inform a collection that is created using select fabrics and garments from past seasons,” Viktor & Rolf said.

The collection ponders over the past. Elements from the past iconic collection are carefully scrutinized before being lovingly reworked into a new order. The previous collections included sculptural white garments made from Cubist facial features, broken picture frames filled with fabric, and giant 3D flowers influenced by Vincent Van Gogh. In Vagabond they are ripped up and collaged. The result is a patchworks of material unfolding at the ends revealing separate colours and patterns.

“Recycling is used as a means of expression rather than a goal in itself. It reflects a thoughtful attitude and a focus on conscious designing.”
